So why would he be at the all-star game? Glad you asked. Here is my take on it.
In 2009, he was supposed to, but he did not attend the NHL All-Star game. He had a one-game suspension for it. So, this means that he had no interest in the all-star game. Hmmm.
Last season was his last with NHL, after announcing he was going back to Russia, and not finishing out his contract with the Red Wings. Pavel Datsyuk was traded to the Coyotes to dump his contract. He then went on to the KHL. He is currently on a two-year deal with SKA Saint Petersburg. They are in the middle of there season. So, he will most likely miss a game or two while he's in LA, as he will be on hand for announcement of the top 100 NHL players of all time.
He is a sure bet to be in the hall of fame. Also probably good odds that the Red Wings will retire his number (#13). He is a two-time Stanley Cup champion. Pavel Datsyuk was awarded the Selke Trophy three times, and the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy Four times, among many other accomplishments.
My guess is that he will be named in the top 100 NHL players of time. We will find out January 27th.
